Meeting People Is Easy: What To Do—And What *Not* To Do—When Approaching Your Idols
The division between fans and musicians during a concert is self-explanatory: There’s the audience, there’s the band and what separates the two is the stage. But what do you do after the show, when that barrier is no longer there, and you have the chance to meet your idols in person? What do you say—and what shouldn’t you say? We asked members of LESS THAN JAKE, A DAY TO REMEMBER, RELIENT K, SIMPLE PLAN, RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS and others what they want to hear—and what they don’t want to hear—when chatting with fans. It sucks to hear someone hacked into Jeff's online accounts. That's just horrible. I'm happy to hear they've had many great experiences with fans. I also agree that personal questions should be off limits. They shouldn't lose their right to privacy just because they are famous.

I agree with jeff. it sucks when someone ask you about your personal life. it hasn't got nothing to do with the music and the band. god i so wanna meet you guys someday! Argentina is waiting!! :D

Totally agree that kind of question really suck. But I think SP fans are really respectful.

I met them at warped tour in Oceanport NJ and they were all so nice and down to earth. I agree that they save lives all the time, and that fans shouldnt ask about there personal lives. They deserve privacy too.

There're many fans who are inconvenient and Jeff is right preserving their kids. I think you've too much patience with many fans. And honestly, a person who harms his idol isn't a true fan. You're always so available to your fans, we haven't reason to complain, I received a tweet from Pierre and it was amazing, one of the best feelings of my life! I wonder how it must be nice to hear questions about your work, must be very rewarding, you do something you love and still there're people who admire what you do. It must be amazing! You're always encouraging people, who like me, wish to start a career in music and know that you've helped me in difficult hours, the music of you was there to calm me down, you're saving lives and are doing so through music! That's wonderful! Thank you guys!

I completely agree with Jeff, fans shouldn't ask about his children or any of their personal lives, I have seen people tweet him about that stuff, and I think it's rude. Even though we all love to learn about them and what they are like, children are an entirely different matter. They should definitely be off bounds, and it should be the music that we all focus on :)

I really liked this article! Kinda clarified some things for fans I believe. I definitely agree about the respect issue. Even if most people don't care that they have given up the good chunk of their private lives, use some common sense and don't pry into it. If you don't like people asking you the question, don't ask them! As awesome as these guys are, they're still regular guys. Think about it this way: They have indeed saved many lives, mine included. I've had my life saved a number of times. If you were drowning in a pool and a random passerby saw you and pulled you out would you totally freak out and need to know every detail of their life? No. You'd have so much respect for them that you wouldn't be able to bring yourself to be so nosy. Simple Plan were the random passerby's that saved us when we were drowning. Respect them, and let them have their own lives.

I agree with Lara. Jeff, you are definitely saving lives : ) In a very different way that doctors are, but you still do it, and we thank and love you very much for that ?

"Nobody's saving lives here." Actually, you are! ;) But I totally know what you mean. Btw, Jeff, if you're reading this... thank you so much for being so nice to me when we met in the airport in Curitiba (Brazil) in March 2009... that was really, really cool of you. *-* It made me feel important and welcome and it just made me so proud of you (L) thank you! You're totally right about the 'being nice' thing: sometimes people just need kind gestures or words or even only a smile to feel better or to have a better day. 8D And THANK YOU *-* for being so nice to me at the soundcheck party in Curitiba as well. You hugged me and I'll never forget that. (L)
