This has probably been one of the hardest decision we’ve had to make as a band in a long time. In Simple Plan, we’ve always acted as a democracy, but at 5 people it’s a lot easier than the thousands of people that emailed us with their passionate comments.
After taking everything into consideration, things are, funny enough, split very evenly. Some of you that loved the first cover came out and told us how much you still loved it. Others, seeing the new black and white image, immediately expressed how much more they liked it.
When all was said and done, and believe us this decision comes after many arguments back and forth, we chose to go with the black and white cover. As we previously said, we like both of them equally, but the bottom line comes down to this: the original cover we presented brought out a lot of intense negative comments. Those that hated it, reeeally hated it. The new one hasn’t garnered such negative passion. It seems to us that while some of you prefer the color cover, no one hates the black and white one. At the end of the day the music is really what will define this album, not the cover and we can all confidently say that when it comes out, there will be no divide and this whole cover story will be far behind.

I would have been happy no matter which one you had picked because I think some people put down too much thought into this, plus they were both awesome. And if they had only read the way Pierre interpret that cover, it made it even harder to misinterpret. But then, there will always be idiots out there. However, I just wanna say that I loved everything you said in this… and you are truly amazing guys ’cause you always care, even when it’s not even people who should call themselves fans that have an outburst at you. Bottomline… thank you for always been so awesome! And I hope some people will shut up and end their stupid petitions and focus on the music… or go live on a deserted island alone.

Well I do like this one, but I admit that you don’t notice the whole band when you look at it. Chuck and Jeff are kinda off to the side and small. Maybe looking up would have helped? O well still a good picture other wise and can’t wait for the CD

I still stand by what I said, the original owned this one by a mile. I’m sure if you guys had posted the black and white one first, it would have garnered just as much criticism, if not more. But well, I guess what ultimately matters, is the music in the album. seriously? i’m totally happy with your decision. i actually choose the other colored one, but it was like that: “doesn’t REALLY matter, it won’t change the way i think about everything related to this band and both covers are awsome”.
and i’m pretty pretty sure it’ll be blowing mind and amazing as everything you do.
in the first place, in fact, i didn’t like the flames one so much… then, i started liking it better, specially for the meaning you gave to it. THEN, there’s the photography… let’s be honest, the coloured cover photography is way better than the b&w. i’m sorry, thats true, you guys look damn good in both, but my favorite picture is in the coloured cover.
BUT, as you said, i didn’t hate the b&w AT ALL. i loved the background all simple and black and.. well, clear. i loved the picture too, it’s pretty, not the best but totally awsome too. i’m way too satisfied with your choice and i’m gonna support you no matter what may comes. and you’re totally right on making this decision speacially because everyone liked the black and white one, even if they loved or hated the coloured one.

Ok je suis vraiment déçu du choix du cover !
Sérieusement, le cover noir et blanc m’attires beaucoup moins.
Aucune expression…Chuck..n’est pas à son meilleur et on en vois que Pierre et DAvid.
Entout es cas, je crois que la premiere idée était la meilleure. Celui-là ne m’attires pas du tout, il ne se démarquera pas des autres. Ça ne frappe pas autant l’oeil.
Guys, pourquoi ne pas avoir gardé votre 1ere idée ??? Je suis vraiment déçue mais bon, il faut faire avec. Je crois que nous n’avons pas tous vu la même chose entre les deux images.

As a loyal fan, I support everything you do. BUT this is just wrong. I think both are fine, but the b&w cover is soooo NOT fair to chuck and jeff who are very IMPORTANT members of the band. Their eyes are closed for goodness sake. What kind of photographer allows that to be a cover shot, regardless if it’s supposed to be a candid shot.

So I am not gonna lie and say I think you made the right choice. I mean its a good picture but it just doesn’t look like an album. But like many have said it honestly wouldn’t matter what the cover looked like I would still buy it. Maybe you should think of releasing both of them that way everyone can have their. Though I normally am against that idea it would work in this case. Then again you can’t always make everyone happy. I love that you considered all of our opinions. However to be honest it seems like you are sending a message that says “send us hate and negativity & we will change it for you.” I mean I found it hard to believe that true Simple Plan fans would leave such negative comments.
Anyways its going to be an amazing album & I can’t wait! Just because I don’t agree on this decision doesn’t mean I don’t support you guys on it. In the end it is your album & it is what makes you happy that counts. There isn’t anything you could do to ever change how much I love you guys!

HEY GUYS I’M PRETTY BUMMED:( OUT THAT YOU CHOSE THE BLACK AND WHITE COVER. I REALLY LOVED THE OTHER ONE. BUT LIKE YOU SAID IT’S UR MUSIC THAT DEFINES THE ALBUM NOT THE COVER. I KNOW THAT’S ALL THAT REALLY MATTERS, BUT I WOULD’VE LOVED TO SEE THE FIRST COVER BE THE COVER FOR THE ALBUM. EITHER I WILL STILL BUY IT OF COURSE. I preferred the cover with the fires in the background, too, but I guess the votes came in and the black and white picture was the more popular.

I really like the cover for the new Cd, but sometimes as you know the cover explains or give you and idea of what is coming on the music. For myself, it gave an idea of what kind of music or how you as a band are relating the theme of your songs with the cover. But hey, as I said, i really like the new cover.

i don’t want to be negative, but i’d have to say i like the other one better. but i totally respect your choice and the reasons of your choice. you do have a good - or rather, great - point. i just think that the other one would have represented alot more. or maybe that’s just me over analyzing everything…
either way, i think the music is alot more important then the cover, and that’s what im looking forward to.

I really like this cover… but i liked them both, i think all the negative comments were so uncalled for and it really makes me angry that it forced you to change your decision just coz some so called ‘fans’ were being so harsh about something as silly as an album cover, its not about the cover, i’m a lot more interested in the music, thats wot it’s all about. but i wish u stayed with the original cover, especially after reading pierres blog on his myspace about why they decided on that one.
but i do really like this one, it reminds me of the hard rock live CD which i loved so much, so it’s making me think this ones gonna be amazing too =]
well, u guys are always so nice to us fans, even the ones who act like assholes… i really like this cover, its’s a lot more focused on just u guys, but more importantly can’t wait to hear the music!!

All I care about, well, MOSTLY all I care about is that you guys love it. It wouldn’t be the same knowing that you guys didnt like it. I would feel really really bad. well, even worse than I do now. So, im really really happy that you guys love it too, because that’s what matters the most. Besides the music. So, im happy with your decision.
Especially since it’s my favourite.

dude i’m really happy with this decision. actlly, this cover isn’t my fav but it so good too. n like i’ve already said, i’d buy both fo sho! and i’ve to disagree with you, the cover is an important thing in the album (not so much as the music i know) but i’ve my faith in you that you can make your best in both of then. it makes me have no doubts about how amazing and fucking cool it’ll be. caaaan’t wait to february (:

I just came up with a solution that will solve everyones problems. RELEASE BOTH OF THEM! make half the copies with cover 1 and other half with cover 2 that way the people who like the first one can get it and people who like the second picture can buy it….not to mention it would be a good collecters item to have both.

2, being *wow*. I love both album covers, but for some reason… this cover has a rawness. It’s so real. I don’t know… The last two album covers had like a theme… the bridal party… and the bus.

i think the cover with the flames was better…
1st because on the black and white one, we can’t really see well all the members (especially chuck)
2nd because it was obvious that, if you gave a second chance to the fans to change their mind, they would… but the thing is, the flame one will never be a cover and that’s sad because it was very nice…
i think you should’ve kept your first idea that, as a band, you chose…
Anyways, i guess we don’t really have the choice because now it’s official, it is the black and white… but i think it represents something a little bit too dark and not really the hyper and energetic SP !

This one is my favorite one out of the two. It looks, to me more more mature and who the hell doesn’t like a black and white album cover? It just makes it look really simple yet really cool. Its not over done or anything, but i must say the album cover is not the thing i’m most excited about. its whats on the album that counts and if you would have went with the other one then…whatever. it wouldn’t have made a difference of whether or not i’d buy it because in the end the only thing that matters is what it sounds like, not what it looks like.

I don’t think they really hate it as much as they made it sound like, and if they did, it’s a little sad, anyways.
I guess they had problem with the fire or something, and I could just as easily find a reason to complain about this one, like saying that the thumbs up is a bad hand gesture or what not (not that I am bashing this cover or anything; I’m just saying others overreacted). Even as some said, the music may not sound like what the cover looks like, and then also that the cover isn’t as important as the music (like what you guys said), so I don’t see what the big deal about the other one is.
Still, I can definitely deal with this one; it’s good. After all, as stated above, it’s the music within it that counts, so I guess the music had just better be good! Lol. ^_^ I love you guys lots! And I’m totally pumped for this new album!

Blah. This one is so boring compared to the other one. I’m going to have to print a pic of the other cover and replace it. And besides I can barely see Seb or Chuck and everyone’s hair blends into the backround. The other one felt more original and less garage band.

Honestly I would have been happy with either because you guys Rock & are Hot no matter what the cover, but this was definately my FAV! I am so FREAKIN’ EXCITED for the CD to come out, I’m willing to fight any crowds or lineups for it.

i have to agree w/ you that the album is more about the music than the cover, but then again the album art adds to the music something that you cant get from downloading or buying itunes from the net.

well… now that I read this… I hate the new one xD
actually, what I think I’ll never understand, is why would you care more about the people that ‘reeeally hated it’. Don’t misunderstand me, I think that is wonderful that you guys gave us the chance to express our opinions about it and the fact that you wanted to consider it to decide is much more than any band has ever done for their fans… but still… I don’t think we have the right to be rude, and try to decide what you have to do with your stuff… as fans we have to respect your decisions and maybe we’ll not love it, but is about what you wanted to do… I mean… then why Pierre defended that cover the way he did? (THAT IS THE PROBLEM I HAVE WITH YOUR DECISION)
But anyway, the cover could be a white piece of paper and we’ll still buy the album cause we care about THE MUSIC… so, do whatever the hell you want with the cover, IT’S YOURS, as long as you don’t change your music caring about what people likes or dislikes (cause it’s as awesome as it is), most of us don’t care about the rest…
and believe it or not… I <3 U guys…
I can’t wait to have that CD in my hands… despite the cover xD

I like the black and white album cover better than the original one that you guys posted. I find it’s a lot more natural. Of course I still like the first one, cause anything you guys do is awesome lol (I know I’m a suck up) but I definitly think you guys made a good decision to go with the second one.

I know it was a very hard decison for you guys to make and i really think it’s awesome that you care what we think. i am not going to say anything bad about the cover that was chosen because it’s still really good. Some day I will love it, but for now it’s just not epic enough for me. I can’t wait for the album though less than 2 months!!

Hey SP! I don’t know if ya’ll read all these comments or not, but just in case you get to this one, I think I might have a solution that will make EVERYONE happy. Why don’t ya’ll use BOTH covers? For example, release half the copies of the album with the black and white cover and the other half with the color cover. That way, everyone gets the album cover that they want and no one is left feeling unhappy or disappointed. What do you guys think??????????

It perplexes me how the people who originally blasted the fire cover are either now not commenting, all sweetness and light, or still being fiery with comments like ‘Thank god you changed it.’
I mean, srsly. How can they call themselves fans when all they did was cause the band to second-guess themselves? Express your dislike for it, sure, but don’t bash on things that you don’t have a right to bash on and for goodness sake, don’t demand anything from them. Be grateful they still bless us with their music after all the trouble we unruly ones give them. >_>

I’m not liking this one. I think it’s too ordinary, and looks like everything else you see. But, it’s your choice, and many times bands doesn’t ask their fans what they think, they just pick a cover. So I think it’s cool you let us pick between the two of them, eventhough I don’t like the one that got picked.

Eh. I still liked the other one a lot better.
I think most people liked this one ’cause it looks kind of like how most people are doing their covers these days and the people must not like something different or unique like the first cover choice.
But I guess it’s just whatever now.
This one is okay I suppose.
I say you should make the first cover choice a limited or special edition for the people who liked it better than this one.
Kind of like how you guys did with the second album.

Looks okay, the flame one looks pretty sick (as in good). Well it all depends what the record is going to be called. If its something kind of boring (backstreet boys style or O Town) this one will be good. But if its like When I’m Gone, Burnin’, Damage Control, etc i know those were pretty lame but yeah if you go with something like in those categories. then FLAME ONE ON TOP!

Hey Isa, that was a hateful note, to call me a loser.
You’re probably one of the fans that wrote
hateful comments to SP about their original cover choice.
I find it quite interesting that a band would give fans a choice of cover, or anything else for that matter. They are supposed to be artists, and as such they should be able to express themselves any way they want to without giving in and changing their minds about something just because of passionate responses. If you look at history some ofthe most remembered artists are the ones that made an impact ant that presented their work without fear that some feather would be ruffled.
Of course Isa, I don’t expect you to understand that because the best comment you can come up with to my comments is that I’m a “loser”.
